DETROIT, Michigan - The Toledo Rockets stuck to their same game plan against the Akron Zips and rolled to a 45-28 victory in the MAC Championship football game Saturday afternoon before 16,225 fans in Detroit's Ford Field. The Rockets were up, 38-0, with nearly 500 yards of offense before turnovers and penalties gave the Zips extra chances to score late in a game they had already lost. 'We got good senior players and good senior leadership,' Toledo head coach Jason Candle said. 'Life is a lot of talk and not enough action.
Our guys took the game plan and put it into action.' It was the third game between the two teams in the last two seasons and the script for all of them was the same. Toledo (10-2) outclassed Akron with over 600 yards of offense against the Zips (7-6) each of the first two times they played. Then did it once again. 'They beat you (three times) you don't have a lot of excuses,' Akron head coach Terry Bowden said. The Rockets were on their mark at halftime, holding a 28-0 lead with 326 yards of offense already in the books.
Toledo's MAC Offensive Player of the Year, quarterback Logan Woodside (23-of-36, 307 yards 4 TD 2 INT), had three TD passes covering 27, 5, and 27 yards, and 229 yards in the air overall at halftime. After the game, Woodside held the game ball under his arms and proudly proclaimed, 'I'm keeping this.' It was total domination for Toledo, 38-0, before the Zips finally scored with 30 seconds to play in the third quarter, as UT tailback Terry Swanson aided the 565-yards of offense for the Rockets, gaining 180 yards and 2 TD on the ground. Akron could only muster 98 yards of offense in the opening 30 minutes, splitting time between quarterbacks Kato Nelson and Tommy Woodson. But the Zips could generate little of anything, running or passing. Toledo had the first turnover of the game, a fumbled center snap to start the second quarter that Akron recovered at Toledo's 38.
With Tommy Woodson at quarterback, the Zips got a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kobi Booker. But it was nullified by an illegal formation, then compounded by a false start. The Zips would be forced to try a 42-yard field goal, but it was blocked by Toledo and recovered and returned to Akron's 34 by UT's Josh Teachey. Moments later, Swanson scored for a 14-0 lead and Akron's chance at making this a game was over. Akron, still with Woodson at QB, suffered through another three-and-out. Toledo answered with an eight-play, 64-yard touchdown drive, ending with another Woodside-to-Johnson five-yard TD for a 21-0 lead.
Then with 1:39 to go before the half UT struck again. The Rockets used 1:30 of it to go the length of the field for a 27-yard Woodside TD pass to Jon'Ve Johnson for a commanding 28-0 halftime lead. With 7:26 to play in the third quarter, a 47-yard field goal by Toledo made it a five-possession lead, 31-0. With less than 100 yards of offense at that point, and the lead soon to be 38-0, Akron's championship hopes were effectively over.

However, the affair has great meaning for both combatants involved.
In this years culmination the contest will feature a rematch of two teams that met in October. The two outfits are old rivals and they are the Akron Zips and the Toledo Rockets. The two teams are coming together again by virtue of winning their respective divisions. The earlier Toledo victory over the Kangaroo Kids of Akron carried little weight in the grand scheme of how this match-up shaped up.
Now the time has come for the two to lock horns and settle the conference overall. For the record, when the two teams last met in Toledo in October the Rockets blasted off on the Zips by a score of 48-21. This time the stage is neutral and the contest will be aired for national audiences. The game will be televised across the country on ESPN with a kick-off time of 12:00 PM ET. The match will come from the home of the Detroit Lions, Ford Field in the Motor City.
Overall, Toledo has won three of the last four clashes between these two intrastate adversaries. The Rockets come in off a blowout victory of the defending champion of this conference, the Western Michigan Broncos last Saturday. The Rockets would defeat the Broncos at home in the Glass Bowl 37-10. Once again, the prolific offense of the Rockets would pave the way on the arm of their talented gunslinger Logan Woodside. Toledo finished with just one loss in conference play this year and was even able to crack the top-25 at one point.
Most notably, the Rockets were defeated by a team vying for a College Football Playoff berth when they were walloped by the Miami Hurricanes in September. The Rockets rolled into Miami and the Canes lit them up for 52 points. : ONE OF THE PLAYERS FAVS!

The list includes Penn State in Happy Valley, Troy on the road, and Iowa State at home. Over this span, the Kangaroos lost all three games. Inside, the MAC the Zips have told a different story as they lost just two games in MAC play. One of the losses came against this Toledo outfit as mentioned. The other defeat was an eyesore when they fell to Miami Ohio but in doing so Akron covered an 11-point line in a 10-point defeat.
Overall, we great Akron the benefit of the doubt there by virtue of the fact it was yet another rivalry game away from their stead. On the year, Akron lost four of their five defeats on the road. The provision of a neutral site helps this teams cause greatly in that will get another shot at Toledo in more reasonable environs. From the get-go we have seen an enormous lean on the Rockets and thus the price has begun to rise considerably in some markets. So far, we have seen the Zips granted an additional two points thanks to action pouring in on the Rockets. In Over/Under markets, we have seen the number rise by two points to its current position of 56, reflecting action on the Over. As we have championed previously, it is hard to beat the same team twice in the same season.
This offers a competitive edge to the Zips. However, the quality here is quite is a disparity between both sides. By no means would we suggest that Toledo will lose this game. However, the number the Rockets are spotting is likely inflated because no one would even consider backing the Zips otherwise. Thus, this is where step in and take back an enhanced price. Akron should come in under the number by virtue of a spirited effort in a rare opportunity for this program.
